What about Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)?
All Traidcraft and Fairtrade-marked products are currently GMO-free, recognising widespread consumer concern about the use of GMOs.
In addition to environmental issues, the fair trade movement and Traidcraft are concerned about exploitative practices that are sometimes associated with the marketing of GMO seeds.
Some fair trade producers tell us they would like to use GMO seeds to improve their yields, and as our aim is to meet our producers’ needs we have to listen to their case carefully.
However, at present there are no plans to allow GMOs into fair trade supply chains as we do not believe the benefits would be sufficient to justify this, and whilst GMOs remain unacceptable to consumers there is no market for GMO fair trade products.
