Are there organic products with the Fairtrade Mark?
There is a wide choice of organic coffee, tea, honey, cocoa and chocolate products carrying the Fairtrade Mark and the range is increasing steadily. Traidcraft organic products include: pasta, cocoa, jams, some of our chocolate, sugar, coffee and other snacks.
Some fair trade products are in fact produced organically, but the costs of certification required are unrealistic for our producers and so we cannot sell them as such. In other situations, the cost of going organic or the reduced yield it would entail, mean that it is not a viable option.
We often encourage farmers to move towards organic production techniques. However, we must be careful that this does not increase their vulnerability, since there is often no premium paid for organic produce in local markets, and this can then increase their dependency on fair trade.
You can read more information on the differences between fair trade and organic on the Fairtrade Foundation website.
