Organic Coffee: discovered by goats, perfected by Traidcraft!

September 22, 2016

Legend has it that coffee was first discovered by a young goat herder in Ethiopia.

He noticed how his goats seemed to frolic with reckless abandon after eating the red berries of the coffee shrub. Naturally he decided to try the berries himself and experienced a similar reaction!

And from that point, humanity has never really looked back. It’s estimated that more than two billion cups of coffee are consumed every day – making it the world’s favourite drink.

At Traidcraft we know that everyone has their favourite coffee – some people love our Ethiopian blend while others are much more passionate about the Malawi Mzuzu variety. It’s one of the joys of coffee-drinking that you can find a drink that suits your personality and your taste buds.

But since we’re right in the heart of Organic September, now seems an excellent time to fill you in on some of the virtues of our Organic Decaffeinated Fresh Ground Coffee. A high quality, delicious-tasting decaff coffee is hard to find – but we think this is the answer…

Our organic decaffeinated roast & ground coffee is a well-rounded medium roast coffee, made with high quality 100% Arabica coffee beans. The coffee beans are handpicked by small-scale farmers who are part of the CEPICAFE co-operative in Peru.

But what really makes this coffee special is the way it becomes decaffeinated. Whereas many decaffeination techniques involve a whole manner of chemicals, the one that we use involves just one thing… water.

The Mountain Water Process involves immersing the coffee beans in water at varying temperature and pressure in order to extract the 99.9% of the caffeine. No chemicals are used, and a filtering process allows the beans to maintain their characteristic flavour.

It’s a simple, clean method that makes great tasting coffee without the need for any chemical intervention.

But the good news doesn’t end there… the coffee farmers who grow the beans get more out of their farming –  they sell their coffee for a fair price and then invest the Fairtrade Premium in community projects, such as schools and healthcare.

So this coffee is good to the environment, good to the people that grow it and ultimately it’s good for you as well. The benefits of a great tasting, fresh cup of organic coffee should not be underestimated!

And to help you celebrate Organic September, we’ve got 10% off our Organic Decaffeinated Fresh Ground Coffee until the 29th September.
