I can educate my children – Radha’s story

Radha Lama has never been to school, so she is proud that for more than 18 years she has been working at Get Paper Industries in Nepal, which makes handmade paper products for Traidcraft.

Both her daughters, Shilpika (13) and Dipshikha (6), benefit from GPI’s support, which helps workers to send their daughters to school. It’s something that isn’t available for all girls in Nepal, which is why GPI has established schools and made education central to its welfare activities.

After her own experience of not being educated, Radha was determined to send her daughters to school, but without GPI’s support “it could be harder.”

Speaking about Dipshikha she said: “I think I am hopeful, because she is very smart, that she will do well in her education. I have never been to school so it is good that I am earning so much money. I have been able to educate my children, so we are happy.

“There are so many people that are educated who are unemployed so, being a completely uneducated girl, it is very good for me that I am here.”

Radha explained why it’s important that Traidcraft customers buy GPI products.

“It will be good for us if they buy the goods so we can send our children to school. If there is no work we will be unemployed, so then it will be hard for us.”

Education is just one of the co-operative’s welfare activities. Others include HIV/AIDS awareness and environmental measures, such as tree planting.
