Traidcraft developed a range of cotton shirts is made from Fairtrade-certified, 100% Organic Cotton. They are produced using cotton from Agrocel, the Indian producers who, together with Traidcraft, helped pioneer the Fairtrade cotton movement.
Why choose Fairtrade?
Our Fairtrade Organic cotton clothing range is made from cotton grown by small farmers. Such farmers, like many other agricultural commodity producers, face exploitation and injustice in international trade.
Kutch is the region of Gujarat in north west India where we source our cotton.
This is a traditional cotton-growing area and farmers here have produced cottons for many generations going back centuries. They are also highly dependent on cotton since it is one of the few crops they are able to grow in their very dry region - the cotton is planted in May and then the monsoon rains of July and August provide the water for growth; harvest is then from October to December.
Organic farming has the extra benefit of boosting cotton yields and in some cases farmers have been able to double their cotton harvest as a result of organic farming methods and improving the soil quality.
Fairtrade certification brings them the guarantee of a minimum price, plus a further premium to be used for community development projects.
