People across the world campaigned together in solidarity and demanded action to tackle global poverty. The month culminated with a worldwide record-breaking attempt to Stand Up Against Poverty when 23.5 million people symbolically 'stood up' together in the same 24-hour period.
Cricket fans in India, school children in Gaza and the West Bank, and crowds at a concert in a slum in Zimbabwe all joined for the world record attempt on 15th-16th October.
People stood together in Times Square in New York, at the foot of the tallest hotel in the world in Dubai, in football stadiums across Spain and Mexico, in churches throughout Africa, and in schools all over the world, including China.
More than 18,000 people took part in the United Arab Emirates, and thousands more in Senegal, Liberia. There was campaigning in countries as diverse as Somalia and Australia - as well as in Johannesburg, Milan, Nairobi, Dhaka and London.
In the UK, campaigners organised and took part in events all over the country, as well as sending postcards and emails. More than 136,000 campaign actions were taken during the month overall - an astonishing testament to your campaigning!
To round off an amazing month, campaigners held up giant white numbers in Trafalgar Square to represent the millions of people who had taken action all over the world. Addressing crowds in the square, Craig Glenday from the Guinness World Records said:
"This is the largest event Guinness World Record has been involved in. It's overwhelming for us to know that this many people have pulled together on a single day."
A clear message to our political leaders
Kumi Naidoo, spokesperson for the Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP) praised campaigners for an extraordinary month. Speaking from Johannesburg, he said:
"Ordinary people around the world have stood up to express their passion to end poverty. Together, we have sent a clear message to our political leaders that we are going to keep pushing them to deliver on aid, on debt cancellation, on trade justice and to provide good and accountable governments.
"The people's voices are growing louder. We will not rest until poverty is ended!"
What next?
Campaigners from across the world will be coming together again in June 2007 - watch out for more news.
