The independent Commission concluded that supermarkets need tougher regulation following an in-depth investigation of our grocery sector. The UK government had 90 days to provide an initial response but they have failed to demonstrate leadership and commitment to the workers and farmers who suffer at the hands of unfair practices.
Fiona Gooch, senior policy officer at Traidcraft said, "The Competition Commission is an independent body established to protect the interests of the consumer. It has undertaken an in-depth investigation over two years and has announced its clear, preferred solution.
"For the government to say it will undertake a further assessment ‘based primarily on what would be in consumers' best interests’ undermines the Commission. Since not even the supermarkets appealed the CC’s recommendation to establish an ombudsman, the government’s failure to commit to decisive action is indefensible. Government’s responsibility should be to consider the public good, which includes the interests of suppliers as well as consumers.
"Establishing an Ombudsman to regulate supermarkets would be a huge step towards ensuring a fair and sustainable food supply chain and protecting vulnerable suppliers in developing countries."
Traidcraft is continuing its campaign for an independent Ombudsman to ensure supermarkets treat their suppliers fairly.
"There is still time for the government to show some leadership on this issue," said Fiona Gooch. "The Competition Commission is consulting with supermarkets on its recommendations. We are calling on the government to confirm that it supports a fair deal for workers and therefore will support the creation of a supermarket watchdog."
