Who said hard work always pays off? For millions of hard-working people in India, unfair trade has trapped them in a cycle of extreme poverty. You can help us change that.
A fair day's wages for a fair day's work If we work hard, it's reasonable to expect that we'll earn enough to provide the necessities of life, support our family and enjoy some freedom. Unfortunately, for millions of people in India this principle simply doesn't apply. Shama is a 19 year old ceramic painter. She lives with her mother, two sisters and brother in the three rooms of their tiny house. Things have been tough for the family since their father passed away, and the girls are forced to travel out of the village for work - much to the disapproval of some locals. A typical day for Shama: Get up at 6am to help her mother with the household chores - No time for breakfast
- Cycle 45 minutes to her job as a ceramic painter
- Complete 200 pieces per day
- Cycle home
- Spend the evening sewing clothes for the women in the village to supplement her wage
Shama has a lot of ambition, and feels certain her talent for painting could help her family escape from poverty. We agree - and that's where Fair Trade Plus comes in. Fair Trade Plus - fair trade in India Fair Trade Plus is a three-year project that aims to empower at least 2,000 poor producers to access fair trade markets. It will: - Increase producers' understanding of their rights and responsibilities in the fair trade process
- Explain how the EU fair trade market works
- Help producers build export sales to EU fair trade markets
- Increase income and employment and improve working conditions
Your donation could help us make life fairer for some of India's poorest workers - please help today.
