International development

For more than 30 years, Traidcraft has been fighting poverty through trade, believing in the positive and transformational potential of trade to bring hope to millions trapped in poverty.

We support poor people in developing countries to engage in trade and build a better future for themselves and their families.

Our development work has three strands to it:

Overseas Development Programme: We have trade-related development projects in East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda) and South Asia (India and Bangladesh). They are delivered through our overseas offices in Nairobi (Kenya), Hyderabad (India) and Dhaka (Bangladesh).

Supporting Social Enterprises:This is built around Traidcraft’s trading partners who are most in need of development support to aid their long-term independent sustainability. As well as providing such support, this programme enables us to pioneer new sectors, models and approaches to fair trade.

Policy and Advocacy Programme: Recognising that our overseas programmes can only reach a limited number of people through projects, our policy and advocacy work aims to have more far-reaching effects on the way global trade is conducted. We influence companies and governments in the UK and Europe, calling for changes in their policies and behaviour which will mean a fairer deal for the world’s poor.
