Christian-based Traidcraft is one of the sponsors of Big Brew, which will see more than 130 churches opening their doors and offering Fairtrade refreshments. Events range from a chocolate tasting in Malton and Big Breakfasts in Filey, Malton and Selby, to a hog roast in Harpham, near Driffield.
There will also be Big Brew coffee mornings at York Minster, Middlesbrough Cathedral and at 70 other churches, including two Salvation Army Citadels.
“This is a really ecumenical event, with Anglican, Methodist, Catholic and United Reformed churches involved, as well as Quaker Meetings and Salvation Army Citadels,” said Jane Riley, Traidcraft’s Fair Trader Business Development Manager.
“Given the size of North and East Yorkshire, it is a massive achievement to have so many churches involved and a testimony to the organisers that this is happening.
“It is a real expression of outreach by the churches which are getting involved in their local communities and we hope that people will look out for details of events in their area and support them.”
Many of the churches taking part already use Fairtrade products as part of their Christian commitment to justice and it is hoped that the Big Brew will encourage many more to do the same. The Big Brew also marks the launch of a campaign to make York a Fairtrade Diocese.
