Traidcraft, the UK’s leading fair trade organisation, is launching a free Fairtrade Fortnight Schools Action Pack to help pupils and teachers organise their activities for Fairtrade Fortnight 2012 (27th February – 11th March), to raise awareness of fair trade.
The pack, which will be available to download from the Traidcraft schools website from 3rd January 2012, contains links to resources, games and activities to help teachers further their pupils’ understanding of fair trade.
Ideas include organising a school fair trade assembly using the Traidcraft assembly plan, holding a sponsored walk with fair trade refreshments at the end, or playing the Fairtrade Families game in class, which is based on the Happy Families game but features families from producer groups across the developing world.
Emma Jewitt, from Traidcraft’s Schools team, says: "Schools can use Traidcraft’s free Fair Trade Schools Action pack to help them organise a day of activities or a school-wide event during Fairtrade Fortnight, which can help achieve or maintain Fairtrade School status."
There was a 435% increase in the number of Fairtrade schools in the UK between 2008 and 2010. There are now 482 schools that have been granted a Fairtrade School Award, while a further 4288 schools are registered with the Fairtrade Foundation as working towards Fairtrade School status.*

Notes to editors
• Traidcraft provides free resources to help schools organise their activities for Fairtrade Fortnight, all of which can be downloaded at www.traidcraftschools.co.uk.
• The Fairtrade Schools Award is given to primary and secondary schools by the Fairtrade Foundation. Schools must meet five targets, including writing and adopting a Fairtrade policy, and using and selling Fairtrade products as much as possible.
