The History of Traidcraft

1979

Traidcraft starts trading in July, from a warehouse in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, with a handful of staff. Our first catalogue was hand-drawn and sold crafts only.

1980

Tea and coffee are introduced to our next catalogue. Indeed, between 1981 and 1985, we pioneer the first fair trade tea, coffee, sugar and chocolate into the UK.

1981

We set up Traidcraft Educational Foundation (TEF) – a charity to raise awareness about producers and the issues of justice in trade and development.

1983

Our organisation moves across the Tyne to Gateshead, to a warehouse on the Team Valley Trading Estate.

1984

Traidcraft becomes a Plc – 300,000 share are issued and are substantially oversubscribed.

1986

TEF charity becomes Traidcraft Exchange and begins working with overseas with producers and community groups.

1987

Traidcraft launches fair trade clothing line.

1990

We helped set up Shared Interest, an ethical lending society and also helped set up EFTA (European Fair Trade Association)

1991

We help to found Cafédirect, the first Fairtrade product to ever hit UK supermarket shelves.

1992

We co-found the Fairtrade Foundation (with five other organisations), which licenses the use of the FAIRTRADE Mark in the UK.

1993

We are the first public limited company in the UK to produce a set of social accounts.

1994

Our e-commerce website, www.traidcraftshop.co.uk, launches.

1999

We launch Geobar, the UK’s first product made up of several Fairtrade ingredients and the first Traidcraft-branded product to be sold in supermarkets.

2004

Traidcraft Exchange voted one of the most innovative charities in the UK. We also gain our first Investors in People accreditation.

2006

We were one of only seven organisations to receive a Queen’s Award for Enterprise for Sustainable Development.

2009

We launch the UK’s first fair trade rubber and charcoal.

2012

Traidcraft’s policy unit successfully lobbies the UK government to introduce a supermarket ombudsman.

2014

We introduce Clean & Fair to the UK – the world’s first Fairtrade marked household cleaning range. We’re also accredited as a Living Wage employer.
